Description
This African made basket was hand woven in Africa by the tribal women of Uganda who have a long history as basket weavers. This Uganda basket was made using the traditional woven coiled method so it is woven in a coil like fashion with the outside having a slightly rougher design and the inside being smoother in appearance. The plant fibers used to create this basket are bukedo, the local term in Uganda for banana leaf stalks which are used in the internal framework of the basket, and raffia, which comes from palm trees. Natural dyes are used to create the colorations of the raffia patterns on this woven basket. Each basket varies in size and design displaying the desires of the individual weaver. This Ugandan basket measures 11.76 inches across from one side to the other, 4 inches tall and has a diameter of 37 inches around the upper outside edge. These African woven baskets are traditionally used for serving food and harvesting food in Uganda. This piece would be great for home decoration as this basket has a small woven loop on its backside for hanging on a wall or would be perfect for fruit or other food service to carry on the tradition of using these baskets how they were intended.
