Description
Today, I will be offering the first group of what I believe is the largest collection of actual KAAGWEEK AWARDS. If you google Kaagweek, you will see that it is a long-standing Dutch Sailing contest. It is held every year and prizes are awarded for the winners. For many years, the prizes were articles produced by De Porceleyne Fles as commemoratives. Prizes were awarded for First Place winners all the way down to 5th Place for many years. I have held a large collection of these pieces which I obtained directly from the factory in the early eighties. Each special commission was done in 2 so that if 1 was not perfect, the other would then be sold to the customer. The remaining second copy was then added to the factory archives and kept for future reference. Keep in mind that only 2 pieces of each award were made: one for the winner and the other as back-up. All my examples are those 2nd copies, most of which are perfect, but each will be described and offered individually. This is the 1962 KAAGWEEK plaquette. It measures 4 1/4" in diameter and shows a windmill. Each type of windmill had it's own design and use and, of course, it's own name. This piece is signed and date coded. The kind of windmill pictured is called the Molen van de Vrouwe Vennepolder. The plaquette itself is in PERFECT condition with minimal crazing but there is a spot of ceramic residue in the very middle of the reverse as pictured. It is marked as 5th Prize for the race.
