The"Bertl"
Doll aka "Little Shopper" HUM 1603 is a very old Doll. Here is the story of the beginnings of the dolls. It all began when Goebel started making dolls from 1900 until 1930. However, with the onset of World War II, production stopped. In about 1949, after the War was over, production began again. The first dolls made in 1949 were sculpted by Karl Wagner and were made of a special rubber ceramic body. But, the material did not hold up and was replaced in the period between 1952 to 1982 with a vinyl body. The Doll for sale here has a rubber ceramic body. She
is remarkedly still in fair condition and her face looks like a real childs'.
However,
there is some cracking showing on her left arm above the elbow, both knees (but just barely on her right one) and on her back, under the blouse. (See photos). And, her basket is deteriorating,
but that can be replaced. Bertl is wearing traditional German clothes. She is wearing a red skirt with a brown top and and beige sleeves with cuffs. She has on an orange head scarf that ties under her chin. She has on white socks with pink horizontal bands and brown felt slippers with black shoe strings. She also is wearing panties and a slip, both that once were white, but now yellowed from aging. All the clothes are in very good condition. Bertl's skin color is darker than it appears in the photo, but it is evenly colored. She has a nice round face with brown eyes and nicely painted black eyelashes and nicely painted eyebrows, too. Her open lips have a fading red color and she has rosy cheeks. Her hair color is brown and is done in two pig tails, each with an orange bow. She is about 10 3/4 inches tall. She has been kept in a safe place (and, has never been held by a child) and my home is a smoke free home, too. While, you may be hesitant to purchase a doll in this condition, it is a rare Doll as the rubber ceramic dolls replaced them specifically because they did not last as long as the newer vinyl dolls do. Thus, they are rarer and worth preserving. No Hummel collection is complete without at least one of the Hummel dolls.
Thank you for considering purchasing the "Bertl" Doll. And, please stay safe!
