    Description

    This is a vintage dyed grass basket from Harar, Ethiopia.  It is 18 inches in diameter and 5.50 inches high.  It is on a 10.50 inch diameter base.  In the center is a tiny open circle (see photo)  This is in the middle of a small sunken area, so it might have been used as a funnel of some sort.  Or it may just be a worn spot.  The top rim and bottom rim are covered with stitched-on leather--all in good shape.  There are four leather (or hide) loops spaced around the underside and trimmed with cowrie shells.  One of the loops is torn and now has some tape holding it together.   Overall, this basket is in good shape, with the colorful designs still visible.
